Library RFID Management System
SIX SENTENCE About RFID FOR LIBRARY
- RFID tags replace both the EM security strips and Barcode.
- Simplify patron self check-out / check-in.
- Ability to handle material without exception for video and audio tapes.
- Radio Frequency anti-theft detection is innovative and safe.
- High-speed inventory and identify items which are out of proper order.
- Long-term development guarantee when using Open Standard.
RFID Technology for Libraries
- RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is the latest technology to be used in library theft detection systems. Unlike EM (Electro-Mechanical) and RF (Radio Frequency) systems, which have been used in libraries for decades, RFID-based systems move beyond security to become tracking systems that combine security with more efficient tracking of materials throughout the library, including easier and faster charge and discharge, inventorying, and materials handling.
- RFID is a combination of radio-frequency-based technology and microchip technology. The information contained on microchips in the tags affixed to library materials is read using radio frequency technology regardless of item orientation or alignment (i.e., the technology does not require line-of-sight or a fixed plane to read tags as do traditional theft detection systems) and distance from the item is not a critical factor except in the case of extra-wide exit gates. The corridors at the building exit(s) can be as wide as four feet because the tags can be read at a distance of up to two feet by each of two parallel exit sensors.
- The targets used in RFID systems can replace both EM or RF theft detection targets and barcodes.
Advantages of RFID systems
Rapid check-out / check-in
The use of RFID reduces the amount of time required to perform circulation operations. The most significant time savings are attributable to the facts that information can be read from RFID tags much faster than from barcodes and that several items in a stack can be read at the same time. While initially unreliable, the anti-collision algorithm that allows an entire stack to be check-out or check-in now appears to be working well. The other time savings realized by circulation staff are modest unless the RFID tags replace both the EM security strips or RF tags of older theft detection systems and the barcodes of the library management system - i.e., the system is a comprehensive RFID system that combines RFID security and the tracking of materials throughout the library; or it is a hybrid system that uses EM for security and RFID for tracking, but handles both simultaneously with a single piece of equipment. There can be as much as a 50 percent increase in throughput. The time savings are less for check-out than for check-in because the time required for check-out usually is extended by social interaction with patrons.
Simplified patron self check-out / check-in
For patrons using self check out, there is a marked improvement because they do not have to carefully place materials within a designated template and they can check out several items at the same time.Patron self check-in shifts that work from staff to patrons. Staff is relieved further when readers are installed in book-drops.
High reliability
- The readers are highly reliable. RFID library systems claim an almost 100 percent detection rate using RFID tags.
- There is no false alarm than with older technologies once an RFID system is properly tuned.
- RFID systems encode the circulation status on the RFID tag. This is done by designating a bit as the "theft" (EAS) bit and turning it off at time of check-out and on at time of check-in. If the material that has not been properly check-out is taken past the exit sensors, an immediate alarm is triggered.
High-speed inventorying
A unique advantage of RFID systems is their ability to scan books on the shelves without tipping them out or removing them. A hand-held inventory reader can be moved rapidly across a shelf of books to read all of the unique identification information. Using wireless technology, it is possible not only to update the inventory, but also to identify items which are out of proper order.Automated materials handling
Another application of RFID technology is automated materials handling. This includes conveyer and sorting systems that can move library materials and sort them by category into separate bins or onto separate carts. This significantly reduces the amount of staff time required to ready materials for re-shelving.Long tag life
Finally, RFID tags last longer than barcodes because nothing comes into contact with them. Most RFID vendors claim a minimum of 100,000 transactions before a tag may need to be replaced.Monday, December 19, 2011

IPTABLES - blocking IPs simplified
You can block an IP from IPTABLES by using
iptables -I INPUT -s 192.168.0.88 -j DROP
You can simplify things a little bit by using a shell script and a predefined text file containing the IPs we want to be blocked. Either create a new file or add the following at the end of the script which activates the firewall:
#!/bin/sh
for i in $(< bad_hosts.lst) ; do
iptables -I INPUT -i eth1 -s “$i” -j DROP
done
Now create a new file in the same directory and name it bad_hosts.lst and add a new IP to be blocked on every single line, like in the example below:
192.168.2.99
192.168.2.67

In Linux, you can access Samba shares by using a SSH prompt. We need a host PC (65.219.4.23) and a destination PC (192.168.0.81). We’ll use jack as a username but first we’ll create a new mount directory:
mkdir -p /samba/share
Now we connect to it:
ssh -N -L 139:192.168.0.81:139 jack@65.219.4.23 jack@65.219.4.23
Now we do a
umount /samba/share

Linux and website design
So you want to develop your website using Linux and you?re not sure
if you’ll find the right tools you might need. Don’t worry, this article
will get you rolling in no time.
There’s not such a large array of tools available for Linux website development, but the ones already here are doing a good job so far. Take Aptana Studio for example. It includes capabilities to build web applications using HTML, CSS and JavaScript and is totally free. Kompozer would be a second option if you wish for someting WYSIWYG.
If however you’d like something old-school, code-ready, try Quanta Plus. It also works great for editing files directly over FTP. VIM, Bluefish, SciTE and gedit they all have CSS and HTML/PHP syntax highliting.
There’s a tool for all your needs when it comes to webdesign in Linux. Create your images with GIMP or Inkscape, create image maps with KImageMapEditor and check for broken links with KLinkStatus.
As for content management systems, you can use a large variety of CMS’s, from Wordpress to Drupal to Joomla - all open-source, all with a decent background of usage behind them.
While GIMP and Inkscape can be very useful in creating your images, one of the best tools in batch-manipulating them is ImageMagick. The commands available in ImageMagick can convert, resize, watermark, edit images without the need of an X server. New Open Government Platform code released
open source release for an Open Government Platform at http://www.data.gov/opengovplatform…
Among the actions in the U.S. National Action Plan announced by President
Obama is an effort under the U.S.-India Strategic Dialogue to produce
“Data.gov-in-a-Box,” an open source version of the United States’ Data.gov
data portal and India’s India.gov.in document portal. The U.S. and India
are working together to produce an open source version available for
implementation by countries globally, encouraging governments around the
word to stand up open data sites that promote transparency, improve citizen
engagement, and engage application developers in continuously improving
these efforts. Technical teams from the governments of the U.S. and India
have been working together since August of this year, with a planned launch
of a complete open source product (which is now called the Open Government
Platform (OGPL) to reflect its broad scope) in early 2012. Find out
the evolution of this project from the U.S. Chief Information Officer
and Chief Technology Officer.
Check out the Open Government Platform repository on
You'll find here a growing set of open source, open government platform
code that allows any city, organization, or government to create an open
data site.
The first module released is the Data Management System, which provides the
tools and capabilities for an automated process for publishing data in the
Open Government Platform, an open source product designed to facilitate
governments around the world to stand up their own open government data
sites. Any government adopting the Open Government Platform will be able to
download and use the DMS code to submit, approve, and update catalog data
electronically on Open Government Platform websites and view management
metrics reports.
Our next planned release will be from India and related to the web site for
the Open Government Platform.
The U.S. and India will be providing additional modules in the future, and
developers are encouraged to participate, provide feedback, and create new
modules and capabilities!
The teams working on this project are the National Informatics
India and Data.gov <http://www.data.gov/> in the U.S.
Success story of Koha adoption in Nigeria
A majority of libraries in Nigeria operate their libraries completely
manually. Nigeria is a developing country and there are many challenges
and constraints facing library automation. There is erratic power
supply and not many professional librarians. There is also an absence of
maintenance and support agreements present from library vendors. The
funding present for libraries in Nigeria is close to non-existent, even
though there is a rule in academic institutions that a certain
percentage of funding should go to the library – that does not happen.
Even sometimes there is a poor attitude (negative) from the heads of the
libraries.
Adeyemi College of Education, which was established in 1962 and is
named after the Reverend Canon M C Adeyemi (1882-1942) and was created
to produce qualified manpower to teach education. They offer
certificates in education, bachelors degrees, and post graduate degrees.
There are about 10,000 students and their library has a collection size
of about 50,000 records.
Migration to Koha, First the library director had to convince the
management of the library to provide funding to purchase hardware and
other accessories for the library. They agreed!!! Using an education
fund they were able to purchase equipment and begin installing Koha and
manually migrating their data to Koha. There were some initial problems ,
such as phobia of the staff in automation, erratic power supplies
(which is a very common problem in Nigeria).
Final thoughts – They are very excited in presenting their story and
Koha to other college community members in Nigeria and help them spread
and install Koha. Koha is gaining recognition in Nigeria. They would
love to host a Koha conference in Nigeria and we really hope that they
will be able to some day.
It’s very encouraging to hear success stories about Koha in
developing countries and that we are all part of helping these people
and librarians get and use a really great system. Go Nigeria and Go
Koha!

Get involved with Joomla content management system
Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which
enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications. Many
aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made Joomla
the most popular Web site software available. Best of all, Joomla is
an open source solution that is freely available to everyone.
What's a content management system (CMS)?
A content
management system is software that keeps track of every piece of
content on your Web site, much like your local public library keeps
track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos,
music, video, documents, or just about anything you can think of. A
major advantage of using a CMS is that it requires almost no technical
skill or knowledge to manage. Since the CMS manages all your content,
you don't have to.
What are some real world examples of what Joomla! can do?
Joomla is used all over the world to power Web sites of all shapes and sizes. For example:
- Corporate Web sites or portals
- Corporate intranets and extranets
- Online magazines, newspapers, and publications
- E-commerce and online reservations
- Government applications
- Small business Web sites
- Non-profit and organizational Web sites
- Community-based portals
- School and church Web sites
- Personal or family homepages
Joomla is free, open, and available to anyone under the GPL license. Read Getting Started with Joomla to find out the basics then try out online demo and you'll quickly discover how simple Joomla is. If you're ready to install Joomla, download the latest version here you'll be up and running in no time.

Installation of Microvision Flic barcode scanner on Linux
Use Microvision Flic Laser Barcode Scanner to catalog
your Library collection. Just scan barcodes, no typing needed
Before using this software you should reset your barcode scanner to factory defaults by scanning the barcode in the user manual. Some of the non-default settings available on the scanner are (not yet?) supported by this software.
Installation instructions
These instructions are for Debian based operating systems (like Ubuntu), but the procedure should be quite similar on any Linux system. Before using this software you should reset your barcode scanner to factory defaults by scanning the barcode in the user manual. Some of the non-default settings available on the scanner are (not yet?) supported by this software.
- Download the latest source
- open a terminal
- unpack the downloaded file to any directory you like
tar zxvf FlicServ.tar.gz
- Make sure the two Perl programs are runnable
sudo chmod 755 FlicServ pop
- Install the required Perl modules and applications
sudo apt-get install libdevice-serialport-perl libthreads-perl
libthreads-shared-perl xautomation
- Go ahead and add a global shortcut for the pop application. If you
don't know how to do this follow the example in Adding universal
shortcuts in ubuntu/gnome but add a shortcut to
/path/to/pop
instead of/usr/bin/emacs
Tethered use
This has been tested with the serial cable that comes with the Flic and also the serial cable connected via a R232-USB adapter, but any cable from Microvision should work.- First find out which port the scanner is connected to for example
/dev/ttyUSB0
. I will use/dev/ttyUSB0
in all of the examples from now on. Just switch out/dev/ttyUSB0
with whatever port your scanner is connected to. - Open a terminal
- Start the application
./FlicServ /dev/ttyUSB0
- Start scanning barcodes. Every time you scan a code you should see the text
pushed xxxxxxxxx
- in the terminal where
xxxxxxxxx
is the barcode you scanned. - You can also disconnect the barcode scanner from the cable, go away and scan a whole bunch of barcodes, come back and reconnect the scanner. All of the scanned codes should be pushed automatically and the scanner gives you a little blipblipblip to let you know that it's memory is empty.
- Now open a text document in your editor of choice and hit the global shortcut key you previously added. The first barcode you scanned should now be inserted.
- The terminal should now show the text
poped xxxxxxxxx
- This can be repeated as many times as you needed.
- Pushing and poping can be done in any order, at any time.
--noserver
If you add the--noserver
switch when starting the
application the application will automatically pop barcodes as soon as
you scan them.--linefeed
If you add the--linefeed
switch when starting the
application the software will simulate pressing enter after a barcode is
poped. --linefeed works both in --noserver and regular mode.
