(FT 12 month fixed term position: Salary £15,001)
Applications are invited for the post of Graduate Trainee in the Library of St John’s College, Oxford for the academic year 1st August 2012 to 31st July 2013. St John’s is one of larger colleges in Oxford, with around 600 members. The Library dates back to the 16th century, and has substantial historical collections, whilst also maintaining student-focussed undergraduate collections and services. The Graduate Trainee will be a key member of a small team, fully contributing to the running of the Library on a day to day basis, making the most of the training opportunities provided by the Bodleian Libraries’ trainee scheme, and being able to work independently on special projects.
The successful applicant will be expected to have a good degree, and to be able to show genuine enthusiasm and commitment to a professional career in librarianship and information work. Excellent IT, communication and organizational skills are essential, as are creativity, energy and self-motivation. An appreciation of historical collections and materials and their use is desirable.

Overview of the post:
The Learning Resources Manager will manage and develop further an effective and efficient learning centre for learners and staff, to support curriculum delivery and enable learners to meet their learning goals. The successful candidate will also support and develop the management of University validation and research and development within the college.
The successful candidate will be qualified to Degree level or equivalent and be a Chartered or qualified Librarian or in the final stages of the qualification. You will have experience of computerised library management, previous experience of managing staff and budgets and experience of developing new initiatives.

Call for volunteers - GLAM / Museum initiative for Wikimediaindia

Initiative Context

Museums are important cultural institutions for GLAM initiatives. There is no complete and reliable list Museums across India. This is due to various reasons like geographical distribution and jurisdiction. These institutions have a wealth of cultural knowledge and artifacts and therefore are key to partner with.
Some of the incredible artifacts they house are not widely known to the general public. As an example Mysore museums house the Halmidi inscription has the oldest kannada inscriptions that go back to 400-500 AD.
Museums can come under various jurisdictions like the following:
  • Archaeological survey of India
  • Central ministries - Culture, Rail, etc
  • State archaeology departments
  • Run by public sectors
  • Private ownership
  • Run by Trusts or NGOs
Museums can cover various themes:
  • Heritage
  • Archaeological
  • Art and Crafts
  • Folk forms/culture
  • Science
  • and more...

What needs to be done?

Catalog and compile a reliable list of Museums for each of the states and UTs in the country. This will need to done by reviewing various sources online, state and central departments.
Subsequently a subset of these could be chosen for specific initiatives.
